Crochet Blue Train Hat Free Pattern

Due to copyright issues, I will call this the Blue Train Hat.  It is based on everyone's favourite tank engine though.

It's very simple to make.

Materials for a young child size hat.

#4 Worsted Weight Yarn in Blue, Black, Grey and White
I used about 1/2 ball of blue of Red Heart with Wool and small amounts of the black, grey and white
I also used some #3 black yarn when making the eyes
Yarn Needle
Size 5.0 Crochet Hook

Feel free to experiment with colours though and hook size

Make the base hat using blue

Start with a Magic Ring
Row 1: Chain 3, Dbl Crochet into the ring 12 times, slip stitch to beginning of first st
Row 2: Ch 3, Dbl crochet into each stick 2x, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 3: Ch 3, {Dbl Crochet into first stitch 2x, next stitch 1x, } repeat until  end, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 4: Ch 3, {Dbl Crochet into first stitch 2x, next two stitches 1x} repeat until end, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 5: Ch 3, {Dbl Crochet into first stitch 2x, next three stitches 1x} repeat until end, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 6: Ch 3, {Dbl Crochet into first stitch 2x, next four stitches 1x} repeat until end, sl st to beginning of first st

( Note this will make a hat that will fit between a 3- 7 year old.  If you want it bigger, simple follow the pattern expanding the had until it covers the top of the head- 2 dbl, then single x times, 2dbl then single x times  If you want it smaller, simple don't expand it so much)

Row 7-13 : Ch 3 and put 1 dbl crochet into each st, sl st to beginning of first st.  Leave a long thread of yarn to weave in with yarn needle and cut.

Ear Flaps in Blue
Ear Flaps should be roughly 3 inches from front and 2 inches from back.  I try to try it on my kids when I am putting them on, but if you have no kid fold hat in half, measure 3 inches, put in first stitch, then 9 single so 10 altogether.
Row 1: 10 sc, turn
Row 2: Chain 1, 10 sc, turn
Row 3: Chain 1, sc2tog , sc till last two stitches, sc2tog , turn
Row 4:Chain 1, sc2tog , sc till last two stitches, sc2tog , turn
Row 5:Chain 1, sc2tog 2x, sc, sc2tog 2x turn
Row 6: Chain 1: sc2tog, sc, sc2tog turn
Row 7: Chain 1 sc3tog, finish off

Repeat on other side

Single Crochet around hat in black and red, ensuring that you evenly spread stitches on ear flaps and make 3 single crochets in the points of the ear flaps.

If you want tassels, measure arm length amounts of red, black, and blue and pull through point on ear flap, braid and tie off.

Train Face

Using Grey yarn, start with a magic ring

Row 1: Chain 3, Dbl Crochet into the ring 12 times, slip stitch to beginning of first st
Row 2: Ch 3, Dbl crochet into each stick 2x, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 3: Ch 3, {Dbl Crochet into first stitch 2x, next stitch 1x, } repeat until  end, sl st to beginning of first st
Row 4: Ch 1, sc around in black, cast off

Eyes ( make 2)
Using white, Chain 3, into first ch, dbl cr 10 times, cast off

Eye Pupils ( make 2)
Using lighter weight black, make magic ring with 3 chains, sc 6 times, pull ring tight, cast off

Sew pupils to eyes with yarn needle and black yarn.

Mouth

Chain 12, Inserting hook into 2nd chain from hook, dbl 5, in 6th ch dbl crochet 2x, then dble crochet till end.  Cast off.  Single Crochet around mouth with black.  ( my mouth is rather large so if you want it smaller make the starting chain smaller)

Assemble: Sew mouth to train face.  Sew eyes to train face.  Embroider half crescent between eyes for nose.

Funnel: Chain 6, turn sc up and then back down ( so you have 3 rows).  Then Chain 2 and sc back to other side, chain 2 and sc back to middle.  Essentially you are making a T.  Cast off.

Sew to hat:  Fold hat in half to get the front of the middle, and place face on the middle.  I recommend laying on a table to ensure that everything is straight as you sew it on.  ( I had to resew on the face as the eyes were crooked the first time).  Sew the straight part of the funnel on the hat, but not the t-part.  It will stick up a bit creating a 3-d effect.

I don't write down patterns often so if there are any mistakes, comment and let me know.

Thanks,
